I took a dive into something new recently. Though I come from Malaysia, I never learnt how to cook it in an authentic way. The malarkey that goes into my frying pan or cooking pot at dinner time may turn out to be edible enough but it would not pass for an original Malaysian taste. So when the offer came up to attend a Malaysian cookery class with a well known Malaysian chef, Norman Musa, I grabbed it and came away feeling pretty chuffed that I had learnt something new.
There’s a common myth that learning is for the young. As if, once we hit midlife, we’re supposed to stop growing, settle into routine, and coast our way to retirement. Rubbish! Midlife is actually one of the best times to learn new skills, and here’s why.
1. Your Brain Loves It
Science says that learning new things keeps our brains young. Picking up a new skill—whether it’s learning a language, playing an instrument, or mastering TikTok—keeps your mind sharp and helps ward off cognitive decline. It’s like a workout for your brain, but without the sweaty gym sessions.
2. It Boosts Confidence
Let’s be honest—midlife can sometimes shake our confidence. Careers change, kids leave home, and suddenly we’re left wondering, “What now?” Learning something new gives us a sense of achievement and reminds us that we’re still capable of growth and change.
3. It Can Make You Money
Who says you can’t start a side hustle at 50? New skills can open doors to extra income. Whether it’s learning social media marketing, coding, or how to sell on Etsy, midlife is the perfect time to explore new opportunities that could bring in extra cash. I doubt that I will be running Malaysian pop up dinners but my mind is still ticking on possible side hustles. Just using my brain to figure out entrepreneurial skills brings me satisfaction.

4. It Keeps Life Interesting
Routine is comforting, but it can also get boring. Learning something new adds excitement to life. Whether it’s salsa dancing, photography, or writing a book, new skills bring fresh experiences and challenges to look forward to.
5. You Finally Have Time
Remember when you were younger and wanted to learn things but never had the time? Midlife is when you can finally say, “Right, it’s my turn.” Kids are older, you know yourself better, and you can choose what genuinely interests you without worrying about grades or job promotions.
6. It Connects You to New People
Learning something new often means meeting like-minded people. Whether it’s an online course, a local workshop, or a community group, gaining new skills can introduce you to a whole new social circle. And let’s face it, making friends in midlife can be a challenge—so why not let a shared interest do the work? I once took a class in podcasting and made a friend after only spending 3 hours in the class.
7. It Sets an Example
If you have kids (even if they’re adults now), learning new skills shows them that growth never stops. You’re proving that life isn’t just about ageing—it’s about evolving.
So, What’s Stopping You?
Forget the idea that learning is just for the young. Midlife is the perfect time to pick up a new skill, whether for fun, health, career, or simply to shake things up. Go on—challenge yourself. What’s one new thing you’d love to learn this year?
