Why Midlife Women Should Be Brave Enough to Wear Red Lipstick

I am in the early 60s and red lipstick is part of my everyday wear. It wouldn’t occur to me to give up wearing red lipstick because I had reached a certain age. Heaven forbid but a well known magazine, Hello, has received a reader letter asking, “Does red lipstick make women look much older?“

My first instinct was to rebuff the assertion of fear of looking older. In this day of #positiveageing, women shouldn’t fear looking older because ageing is a privilege, not a curse. Every wrinkle, every silver strand of hair tells a story of resilience, laughter, and wisdom gained over the years.

Society tries to convince women that youth is the only form of beauty, but real beauty comes from confidence, experience, and authenticity. Chasing eternal youth is exhausting, but embracing the changes that come with age is liberating.

Instead of fearing ageing, women should own it—because a woman who is comfortable in her skin, at any age, is the most powerful presence in any room.

Next, there’s something about red lipstick that makes a statement. It’s bold, it’s confident, and it refuses to blend into the background. And yet, so many midlife women hesitate to wear it. Maybe it feels too loud, too daring, or too “young.” Well, I say: nonsense! It’s time we reclaim the power of red lipstick and wear it with pride.

Red Lipstick Is a Power Move

Red lipstick has been a symbol of confidence and strength for centuries. Think of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, or even Cleopatra—women who knew how to make an impact.

Red lips command attention and say, “I know who I am.”

So why should we, as midlife women, shy away from that kind of energy? We’ve earned the right to take up space, to be seen, and to embrace our own power.

It’s Not About Age—It’s About Attitude

Somewhere along the way, society decided that women over 40 should “tone it down.” But why? If anything, midlife is the perfect time to start doing the things we were too self-conscious to try in our younger years. Wearing red lipstick isn’t about looking younger—it’s about embracing the woman you are now. The confidence, the wisdom, and yes, the fabulousness.

The Right Red Exists for Everyone

One of the biggest myths is that red lipstick doesn’t suit everyone. The truth? There’s a red for every skin tone. Whether you prefer a classic blue-toned red, a fiery orange-red, or a deep berry shade, there’s a perfect match for you. Visit a makeup counter and experiment—you might be surprised at how much a swipe of red can brighten your face (and your mood!).

It’s an Instant Mood Booster

Ever noticed how a simple coat of lipstick can make you feel instantly more put-together? Red lipstick is like a shot of espresso for your confidence. Whether you’re running errands, heading to a meeting, or just sitting at home in your pajamas, a bold lip can give you a little extra pep in your step.

You Deserve to Have Fun

Life is too short to worry about whether something is “too much.” Midlife is about stepping into your power, embracing your individuality, and—most importantly—having fun. If red lipstick makes you feel good, wear it! Break the rules, ignore the naysayers, and enjoy the little luxuries that bring you joy.

So go on—swipe on that red, stand a little taller, and let the world know that midlife women are anything but invisible. Because you, my dear, are just getting started!
